Avalanche and Snow Stability
Prevention is better than cure and avoiding an avalanche prone area is a billion times easier than finding buried ski partners in avalanche debris.
This workshop is designed to teach you to read not only the conditions of the visible snow, but also what lies beneath. The complex layers underneath the tempting fresh powder are dangerous and need to be understood.
Learning to interpret the different layers of snow, thus learning their history, reveals many important clues about their intentions. Where possible we will seek out recent avalanches as they reveal many of the reason why they occurred.
Topics covered will include:
- Shovel Shear Test
- Rutsch Block test
- Digging a Snow Pit
- Using maps to predict snow patterns.
Learning to understand the snow’s constant evolution is one of the keys to safe travel in the mountains.
