Glacier Travel and Crevasse Rescue

It is inevitable when traveling in the mountains that at some stage a glacier will need to be crossed. These workshops have been designed to help give you with the skills to move safely through glacial terrain

We run this at two different levels; Introductory and refresher. Outlined below is what is some of what will be covered in both levels.

Introductory Course

Traveling on Glaciers: Spotting crevasses, different types of crevasses, route planning and defensive movement on glaciers.

Crevasse Rescue, the Basics: initial actions, belays, preparing the lip of the crevasse, buried skis/board belay, knots, tug of war and climbing out of a crevasse.

Advanced and Refresher Courses

In this Advanced Workshop we will recap the above and then cover the following:

Rescues: assisted hoist, z-hoist, six-to-one-z-hoist and abseiling into a crevasse.

Roping up for glacier travel: when to rope up on a glacier, how to rope up, rescues when roped up and different scenarios in which you may need to dig a belay.

Please Note: Having done one of our workshops will not make you invincible - it is essential to practice what you have learnt on a regular basis if you want to be able to pull yourself or your friend out of a crevasse should the situation arise!
