Iberian Highlands: Wildlife & Landscape Photo Expedition
Iberian Highlands: Wildlife & Landscape Photo Expedition
What better way to discover rewilding than by living it directly?
Capture the complete essence of Spain's wildest region on an unforgettable 5-day photography adventure. This workshop offers a unique dual focus: documenting rewilding projects and capturing the most breathtaking seasonal landscapes and wild fauna of the Iberian Highlands. The backbone of our journey is unparalleled access to the Iberian Highlands rewilding sites. You will photograph the legendary Przewalski horses against sweeping mountain backdrops, and capture the hardy Tauros cattle and Serrano horses as they graze across fire-restored plains—nature's own "four-legged firefighters." These magnificent animals provide a consistent and powerful photographic subject throughout the year. Complementing this core experience, we will venture into a variety of hand-picked locations, specifically chosen to align with the peak photographic opportunities of each season. We will guide you to the best spots to track and photograph majestic red deer, graceful roe deer, and elusive fallow deer moving through spectacular settings. From ancient forests and endless steppes to rocky outcrops and dramatic skies, each location is selected to ensure we are in the right place at the right time for stunning landscape photography. Experience specialized bird photography from carefully positioned hides, capturing magnificent griffon vultures soaring against mountain peaks, and during summer months, the rare Egyptian vulture alongside red kites and other raptors. Each day is structured to combine these two pillars. Expert local guides will lead you on dedicated shoots at the rewilding sites and then to the best seasonal spots for landscapes and other wildlife. From dawn shoots capturing golden light on ancient landscapes to dramatic sunset compositions featuring both wildlife and sweeping vistas, you'll return home with a complete portfolio of the Iberian Highlands. Perfect for photographers seeking to master both wildlife and landscape photography in one of Europe's most pristine and photogenic regions. Professional local guides. Small groups for optimal photography conditions. All skill levels welcome.
Itinerary
Our itinerary is built around a central photographic anchor—the rewilding animals—while the surrounding activities and locations change with the seasons to showcase the Iberian Highlands at its very best. Every workshop includes visits to our rewilding project sites, providing guaranteed opportunities to photograph the Przewalski horses, Tauros cattle, and Serrano horses. These magnificent animals offer different lighting, backgrounds, and behaviors to capture depending on the time of year. The rest of our time is dedicated to exploring different prime locations chosen specifically for their seasonal highlights, from dramatic wildlife events to perfect landscape conditions. Spring Workshop (March-May) - "The Green Explosion" Focus: Vibrant landscapes emerging after winter. We target locations with carpets of wildflowers to serve as a backdrop for the Przewalski horses, and misty valleys for magical landscape shots. Fresh oak forests coming to life, young animals with their mothers, and active bird migration provide additional seasonal opportunities. Summer Workshop (June-August) - "Land of Contrasts" Focus: The harsh beauty of golden grasslands under intense blue skies. We select locations where animals gather around scarce water sources. The extreme light and stark contrasts create dramatic images, while hides provide opportunities for Egyptian vultures. Long golden hours are perfect for both wildlife and expansive landscape shots. Autumn Workshop (September-November) - "The Roaring Season" Focus: The spectacular red deer rut (la berrea). We travel to specific valleys where stags are most active. The forests transform into tapestries of gold and amber, and our chosen locations for landscape photography will reflect this, taking advantage of misty mornings and dramatic autumn skies. Winter Workshop (December-February) - "Frozen Highlands" Focus: landscapes and animals adapted to winter. We will explore locations that transform into a monochromatic wonderland. Our focus will be on minimalist compositions: bare oak branches against white landscapes, frozen streams, and crystal-clear mountain air for sharp images that contrast beautifully with wildlife subjects.

How your experience helps rewilding efforts
In an area where depopulation is a big problem, your trip makes a direct difference. We only work with local partners. This means your entire experience—from the travel agency and the restaurant to the guides and your lodging—comes from the region itself. This helps change the economic model and proves that nature-based tourism benefits everyone. A portion of your visit also directly funds habitat management and wildlife tracking. This supports the conservation projects of Rewilding Spain in the Iberian Highlands. Through guided tours and expert explanations, you become a rewilding ambassador. You'll share what you've learned and support conservation long after you go home. By choosing local businesses, your visit helps create a stable income for communities. This encourages them to actively support conservation efforts. Your participation shows that wildlife and natural landscapes have real economic value, giving local people a sustainable alternative to traditional activities that might harm the environment.
Iberian Highlands | Spain
The removal of dams and artificial barriers is restoring the natural flow of rivers and streams across the Iberian Highlands. This is revitalising aquatic ecosystems, allowing fish and other freshwater species to move freely and regain their abundance.
