This immersive two-day journey in Țarcu Mountains takes you into one of Europe’s most ambitious rewilding areas, where European bison have been successfully reintroduced and now roam freely across vast mountain landscapes.
Moving through forests, meadows, and open valleys, you’ll discover how nature recovers when given space — and how large herbivores play a key role in shaping resilient ecosystems. Through hiking, tracking, and storytelling, the experience offers a deeper understanding of how rewilding is restoring natural processes in the Carpathians.
You will explore landscapes linked to the UNESCO World Heritage site Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe, where some of the continent’s last untouched forests still survive.
Rewilding Story: European Bison: Once extinct in the wild across Europe, the European bison has been reintroduced in the Țarcu Mountains as part of large-scale rewilding efforts. Today, free-roaming herds are reshaping the landscape — grazing, creating habitat diversity, and supporting biodiversity. Their presence restores natural dynamics and contributes to rebuilding functional ecosystems. During this experience, you will learn how their return influences vegetation, wildlife, and ecological processes, offering a living example of rewilding in action.
Nature: The Țarcu Mountains form part of one of the largest connected wilderness areas in Europe, with landscapes of ancient forests, open meadows, and remote valleys. These ecosystems are linked to the UNESCO-listed primeval beech forests, among the most intact forest habitats on the continent. Their complex structure, natural dynamics, and biodiversity make them essential for conservation at a European scale.
Communities: Rewilding in the Țarcu Mountains is closely connected to local communities, creating opportunities through nature-based tourism and strengthening local identity. All meals and snacks are locally sourced, supporting small producers and businesses from surrounding communities, while discovering traditional food, mountain culture, and the close relationship between people and nature in this region.
Difficulty: Designed for a relaxed pace, this experience is accessible to most participants and focuses on exploration, storytelling, and immersion in nature.
Pace: Flexible and adaptive — shaped by weather, group dynamics, and meaningful moments, with a focus on immersion.
