Hațeg Country - Nature & Culture

What better way to discover rewilding than by living it directly?

This two-day experience in Geoparcul Internațional UNESCO Țara Hațegului connects history, culture, and nature in one of Romania’s most unique landscapes. From traditional villages to river valleys and wetlands, you’ll discover a region where human history and natural processes have shaped the land together over time.

As you explore cultural sites and rural landscapes, you’ll begin to understand how communities have influenced and maintained this environment over time, preserving traditions that continue to support biodiversity and local identity. Moving into river corridors and wetland areas, you’ll start to read the landscape itself — discovering how water, wildlife, and human activity interact to shape a dynamic and evolving ecosystem.

Through easy walks, storytelling, and local encounters, the experience unfolds at a relaxed pace, allowing time to observe, reflect, and connect with both the cultural and natural heritage of Țara Hațegului.

Rewilding Story: Beavers: In Geoparcul Internațional UNESCO Țara Hațegului, rewilding is visible through the return of beavers in Lunca Streiului (Strei Floodplane). Once extinct in Romania, beavers have been successfully reintroduced and are now reshaping river systems across the country, including in this region. As ecosystem engineers, they create wetlands, regulate water flow, and increase biodiversity. Their presence transforms the landscape — a clear example of how rewilding supports healthier, more resilient ecosystems.

Nature: The rivers, valleys, lakes, hills of Geoparcul Internațional UNESCO Țara Hațegului host a natural “amphitheatre” of habitats from wetlands and meadows to forested slopes, which support a rich variety of birdlife, as well as unique flora, including insectivorous (carnivorous).

Communities: All meals and snacks are locally sourced, supporting small producers, local gastronomic points (Puncte Gastronomice Locale), while discovering traditional food, rural culture, and the close relationship between people and nature in this region.

Difficulty: Designed for a relaxed pace, this experience is accessible to most participants and focuses on exploration, storytelling, and immersion in nature.

Pace: Flexible and adaptive — shaped by weather, group dynamics, and meaningful moments, with a focus on immersion.
