A vulture experience around the Baronnies Massif

What better way to discover rewilding than by living it directly?

This activity opens the door to the majestic world of vultures, true artists of flight and gliding that play a fundamental role in our local ecosystem.

Discover the vultures and the history of vulture’s reintroduction with a guide from Vautours en Baronnies. In 1996, we released the first Griffon vulture and 30 years later, the colony is over 350 pairs breeding! In 2004, we started reintroducing the Cinereous vulture and in 2016, the Bearded vulture. The Egyptian vulture came back in the area by himself. All the 4 European vulture species can be seen during the tour, but you need to be lucky ! These are wild animals...

A little walk of 30 minutes along a nice path will lead to the top of the cliff, where the heart of the colony is located. There, we will see vultures flying around with a unique proximity.

In this open land, other bird species can be observed as the Peregrine falcon, the Short-toed eagle, the Dartford warbler or the Ortolan bunting.

Program

The tour starts at 9:00 AM. A walk of 30 minutes will lead us to the observation spot. During 3 hours, you will discover the vulture colony. The guide will show you bird breeding in the cliff (depending on the season), birds flying around (sometimes they can get really close, as we will be positioned on the edge of the cliff, at flying height) and give you a general overview of the vulture’s situation in France. From the first release in 1996 to the current situation, the guide will explore the evolution of the status of vulture populations in the Baronnies and the current threats they face. From early spring to late summer, all four types of vultures can be found on this site. If you are lucky enough, you will be able to observe them all from the same observation spot, as they all share the same habitat. In any case, it is very likely that you will be able to observe Griffon and Cinereous vultures, which are particularly abundant and numerous here. This activity is suitable for all kind of public, whether you are a wildlife expert or a beginner, a hiker or simply enjoy a small walk. As long as you are eager to learn, you will be surprised! This outing is the perfect opportunity to discover how a local initiative turned the wildlife come back as a great opportunity for all the Baronnies residents. Weekend reservation are not open automatically, please contact us if you need to book for a weekend, Thanks!

How your experience helps rewilding efforts

Vultures are a keystone species. Their presence helps restore the function of scavenging, which is essential to any natural ecosystem. Vultures are cleaners. By feeding on carcasses, they help maintain their environment by preventing pollution of the surrounding soil and rivers. Having all four types of vultures is also important, as each species plays a complementary role in cleaning up. This tour directly helps the association Vautours en Baronnies in its various actions to protect vulture populations. By visiting the site, you are helping to improve knowledge about these animals, which often receive unfairly negative press. You will also learn monitoring practices and local monitoring programs. As this excursion is supervised by specialists, we also want to show that a model of sustainable tourism is possible. By booking this activity, you will help demonstrate that tourism can be a positive force.
