Rewilding Weekend

A 48-hour forest and riverside camp in northern Sweden where you can experience rewilding from the inside - through hands-on restoration, outdoor camp life, shared meals, local knowledge and deep connection with a living landscape.

What better way to discover rewilding than by living it directly?

What if tourism could help a landscape recover?

Rewilding Weekend Camp is a 48-hour immersive experience hosted by Rewilding Sweden and SLU’s Centre for Nature Interpretation in the Rödån landscape of Västerbotten, northern Sweden. It is created for people who want more than a beautiful nature escape. This is a chance to slow down, live simply by the river, take part in practical restoration work, and experience what rewilding can feel like in your hands, body and heart.

During the weekend, you will join a small group in a forest and riverside camp. Together, we will cook and eat outdoors, learn about the river and surrounding landscape, explore local stories and ecological processes, and contribute to hands-on restoration activities shaped by the needs of the place.

This is not a luxury retreat or a conventional guided tour. It is a warm, grounded and participatory camp for curious people who want to reconnect with nature, contribute to something meaningful, and be part of a new kind of nature-positive travel.

You do not need previous experience in restoration or rewilding. You only need curiosity, openness, respect for the place and a willingness to take part in shared camp life.

All proceeds from the experience go back into the local economy and nature restoration.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival, landing and camp life Arrive in the Rödån landscape and meet the Rewilding Sweden team and your fellow participants. We will settle into camp, introduce the place, share the intentions and purpose of the weekend and begin to understand the river, forest and rewilding work that shape this experience. The evening is about landing gently: sharing a simple outdoor meal, getting to know each other and the non-human nature also living there, listening to the landscape and preparing for the weekend ahead. Day 2 - Rewilding in practice The main day of the camp is dedicated to hands-on rewilding and place-based learning. Together, we will take part in practical rewilding work connected to restoring the river. The exact activity will depend on weather, safety, ecological priorities and what is most useful at the time. The day will also include time spent moving slowly through the forest and along the river, local stories, campcraft, shared cooking, quiet listening and sensory practices, solo time in nature, and conversations around restoration, wildness and people’s relationship with living landscapes. In the evening, we return to camp for food, fire and time to let the experience settle. Around the campfire, participants may also be joined by local storytellers, guides or others connected to the landscape and its history. Day 3 - Reflection and departure On the final morning, the group continues with restoration work, quieter sensory and listening practices, and time spent in silence with the sounds of the forest and river. Before departure, the camp closes together with time for reflection, questions and conversation around what participants are taking with them from the weekend, and how elements of the experience, from attention and outdoor practices to restoration and relationship with place, might continue into everyday life and local communities beyond the camp itself. Please note: the programme may be adapted depending on weather, safety, restoration needs and group conditions.

How your experience helps rewilding efforts

This experience directly supports Rewilding Sweden's work to rewilding landscapes and reconnect people with nature. By joining the Rewilding Weekend Camp, guests do not only visit the landscape - they actively participate in her recovery. The weekend includes hands-on ecological restoration and learning connected to the river, forest and wider Rödån landscape. The camp also supports a wider model of regenerative and nature-positive tourism, where visitor income helps strengthen local skills, local livelihoods and long-term ecological restoration. All proceeds go back into the local economy and nature restoration. This experience helps demonstrate how travel can become a form of participation: supporting wild nature, deepening people's relationship with place, and helping participants carry rewilding knowledge into their own lives and communities.
