A Sanctuary for the Wild At The Brewers Cottage, the garden is a biodiversity hotspot, having recorded 113 moth species in a recent survey. Guests are encouraged to immerse themselves in this natural environment. Local Species & Viewing Guests can spot diverse wildlife from the cottage, including badgers, pine martens, red squirrels, foxes, and birds like crested tits, Scottish Crossbills and iconic raptors. The garden is particularly active at dusk, with dedicated feeding areas for nocturnal visitors. Wildlife Interaction & Safety To protect yourself and the animals, please adhere to these guidelines: Observe from a distance: Use the provided binoculars to avoid stressing the animals. Be quiet and patient: Minimizing noise and movement often yields the best sightings. Do not feed or touch: Never feed animals by hand or attempt to touch them. Engaging with Nature. Wildlife Diary: Guests are invited to log sightings to help monitor local species. We have now built a small wildlife watching & photography hide which has fitted perfectly into our established garden and offers a wonderful place to sit and peacefully observe nature. Technology: Use the dedicated app to view the Pine Marten nest box camera and utilize the camera mounts in the feeding areas. Further Exploration Located in the Affric Highlands rewilding area, guests can explore nearby Glen Affric (deer, otters, beavers), Glen Strathfarrar (wild goats), and Glen Cannich. Wildlife Seasonal Calendar Spring (March – May) Activity: The garden "wakes up" as migratory birds return. Highlights: Ospreys return from Africa (look for them over the nearby lochs), and Red Squirrels are particularly active as they forage for stored caches. Listen for: The first calls of the Cuckoo in late spring. Summer (June – August) Activity: Long days provide the best viewing for breeding species and young animals. Highlights: Pine Martens are most active during the long twilight hours. Look for young Badgers emerging from setts. In the Garden: Bats are a guaranteed highlight at sunset. You may also spot Dragonflies and Damselflies near the burn. Autumn (September – November) Activity: A time of dramatic change and preparation for winter. Highlights: The famous Red Deer Rut—listen for the powerful roaring of stags in Glen Cannich. Atlantic Salmon can often be seen leaping upriver. In the Garden: Fungi appearing in the woodland borders. Winter (December – February) Activity: A quieter, more intimate time for viewing hardy residents. Highlights: Red Deer often move to lower ground to find food, making them easier to spot from the road. In the Garden: Crested Tits and Coal Tits frequent the bird feeders daily. Look for the elusive Pine Martens visiting the windowsill for their evening treats (peanuts and sultanas). Year-Round Residents Some of our most iconic neighbours can be seen regardless of the season: Golden Eagles & Sea Eagles: Often seen soaring over Glen Affric. Pine Martens & Badgers: Regular nightly visitors to the cottage garden stations. Red Squirrels: Daily visitors to the garden peanut feeders.
