Itinerary

DAY 1: ENTERING WOLF TERRITORY We arrive at the hotel and settle in before heading out into the forest. As daylight fades, we walk through an active wolf territory, learning to read tracks, movement, and subtle signs in the landscape. We share a simple, prepared dinner outdoors before the night falls. Later in the evening, we stop, wait, and listen. Often, wolves howl in the night. There are no guarantees — being there is the experience. We return to the hotel late, for rest and a warm bed. DAY 2: WOLF TRACKING AND LISTENING The day begins with a well-deserved breakfast at Färna. For those who wish, there is time to relax and unwind at the spa before heading back into the forest — a perfect way to recharge. We then set out for wolf tracking in the field. The focus is tracking. We follow paw prints, paths, and other subtle signs that reveal how wolves move through their territory. Along the way, we talk about wolf behaviour, communication, and conservation — shaped by what we encounter. As night falls, we head back out for another long evening of waiting and listening. Often, wolves howl in the darkness. There are no guarantees. Late return to the hotel for rest. DAY 3: A SLOW RETURN The final morning begins without hurry. After breakfast, we travel back to Köping for a shared coffee and something sweet before departures toward Stockholm or Arlanda, bringing the experience to a gentle close.

How your experience helps rewilding efforts

Our mission is to spread awareness about wolves in Scandinavia. We also aim to act as an example to show that tours done in a responsible way can provide substantial income to the local community. We have organised wolf tracking trips in Sweden since 2005, collaborating with the Scandinavian Wolf Project and local county board rangers. This guarantees an authentic experience while at the same time contributing to nature conservation. By choosing this adventure, you actively contribute to conservation through our Save the Forest Fund and you will also support the local economy. We share your commitment to preserving nature and rewilding the environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

- Are we likely to see wolves? Wolves in Sweden are very shy and difficult to see in the wild, mainly since the landscape is flat and the forests are dense. Our main focus on this tour is therfore to listen for howls, search for tracks like paw prints, territorial markings, killed prey and to learn and understand. If the current situation is promising, we may also watch for wolves at some strategic location. Although our guests rarely get to see Wolves it does happen occasionally. And most of our guests agree that it is more impressive to hear the howls of a pack in a dark forest, than to see them. - Are we likely to hear the wolves howl? Yes, very likely. We hear wolves howl on most tours. For many of our guests, this is an unexpected highlight of their visit to Sweden. - Is it safe to stay out with wolves? Yes, there is no danger whatsoever. Wolves are extremely shy and don’t attack people. The safety precautions during this trip are more about making sure we all stay warm and dry, that we sleep well and we don’t fall while hiking Our guides are experienced and know how to handle any situation that may occur. - Is there is a risk that we will disturb the wolves? We always stay at a respectful distance as we don't want to disturb the wolves. It is of course in our interest that the wolves do not move to another area. - How late are we out in the evenings? Often until after midnight, as this is when wolves are most active. In September, wolves tend to be active earlier, so we usually return to the hotel much earlier. Late breakfasts allow time to rest the following mornings. - How far will we be walking each day? 2–5 km per day; it depends on the current wildlife situation. - How do I get to the starting point of this adventure? Take a train from Stockholm or Arlanda airport to Köping station, a 1 hour 20 minutes journey. We'll meet you at Köping station and take you to the wolf territory. - What will the food be like? We will eat all meals out in the forest, sometimes by a campfire. Meals will be simple but filling and tasty, and we all help out with cooking and grilling. Some of the meals will be prepared in beforehand and just heated. Veggie, gluten free or no fish, we take any diet just as seriously as anything else as long as you let us know in beforehand. - Is this suitable for first-time wildlife travellers? Yes. This is a calm, guided experience with hotel nights and a small group. You don’t need outdoor or wildlife experience — just curiosity, patience, and normal fitness. - Why should I choose to join this trip? At WildSweden, we share your vision for respecting and preserving nature. We offer tours with local guides, comfortable accommodations in nature, and access to off-the-beaten-path areas, creating an exceptional and authentic experience. Plus, we provide essential equipment for your convenience. - Is there a minimum age? Minimum age is 12 years. This experience includes late evenings and time outdoors, so it’s best suited for people who are comfortable with quiet waiting and slow walks. - Can this experience be booked as a private tour? Yes. You can request a private tour on other dates. Private tours are also a good option for families, groups of friends, or guests who want their own pace. - Is this suitable for wildlife photography? This is not designed as a photography tour. You’re welcome to bring a camera, but the focus is on tracking, learning, and quiet listening — often in low light.
